One of the things I love of Goldfrapp is that they actually make original music, their sound is unique, no samples, no following the trend, Alison's lyrics are eclectic, she can write about fake tits (Clowns), drugs (Ride on white horse, Train), the end of a story (Melancholy sky), clonation (Utopia) or whatever, but you can still feel her own poetic touch. And, last but not least, they made a few covers of other songs. Is not that there is something wrong about making a cover song, but I think that an artist has to put on them something different, in order to show that it's not running out of ideas.
The most known Goldfrapp's cover is probably 'Yes Sir, I can boogie' from Baccara, which was a female duo from Spain. The song was also the Baccara's debut, and it reached the top of the charts across the whole Europe, including UK, where they were the first female duo to reach number one.
As a ex-deejay, who still loves the 70's (I used to give a party in my town, each year, called 'BACK TO '70's NIGHTS' where I played only songs from the seventies), I obviously own the vinyl of this song, and, still because I love those songs, I used to rubbish each cover version I heard, always thinking "There is nothing better than the authentic song!". Until I discovered Goldfrapp.
I came across their cover in the best way you could imagine: by watching the great DVD 'Wonderful Electric', where they played this song at Somerset House. Since that live performance was really amazing, and since their version is really different than the original song, I didn't realize it was a cover, until I read the set list. Besides, it was hard to think while I was watching Alison using her theremin, as you probably know if you have seen the video, or if you have attended some of their concert during the Black Cherry Era.
According to the stats you can find on this website here, they played live this song twenty-seven times, from 2003 to 2005, so, since I started attending their gigs later, I've never had the chance to see them play this song live. What a shame!
As I wrote a little while ago, one of my dreams would be Alison to perform live Donna Summer's 'I feel Love'. I think that this song fits with her sublime voice.
The song is among the track listing of the single 'Twist', and you still can buy it on Amazon, or, if you are vinyl lovers as I am, there is also the vinyl version which is a treat for every Goldfrapp fan.
Here two videos from youtube, where you can listen to the original Baccara's version, and the astonishing Goldfrapp live performance at Somerset House.
